Dribbling Billboards?

We gave you the scoop on the NFL revolution.  Now we’re covering a topic sure to be the center of the near future’s most heated round table discussions.  What is it, you ask?  Individual athlete sponsorship.  It’s a common practice among athletes in boxing, MMA, auto racing, and team sports abroad. But, the NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL, are late bloomers when it comes down to athletes being individual billboards for sponsors. While fans hail to the uniform in backyard match ups with names printed on some of the greatest threads in history, NBA owners have something new in mind. Individual commercialization, pegged as a bright future for revenue generators.  One recent example being Herbalife‘s sponsorship of the Los Angeles Galaxy, a contract valued at $44 million dollars over a 10-year period, a huge attribute to Major League Soccer‘s richest team.  Just for allowing small patches of company logos to rest on the empty spaces of jerseys.  Although the idea is likely to gain tremendous profit, the NBA Board of Governors’ decision on the matter won’t come for several years down the road.  However, according to the New York Times the idea has risen a few eyebrows and is gaining momentum.

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL ABOUT SEEING CORPORATE LOGOS UPHOLSTERED ON YOUR FAVORITE PLAYERS JERSEYS?  Let us know below!

I understand the idea behind it, but I’d personally hate it if jerseys were covered in ads. The clean looks and great design of today’s jerseys would be tarnished if they were covered by corporate sponsors. Leave it to the players to endorse products off the court on their own time.
