Welcome to Gino’s Music Corner. I’ll keep it short, basically, I’ll be reviewing music as I hear it. So you’ll be reading my exact train of thought as a rap artist as I’m listening. And I keep it honest. This is my opinion, so if you disagree, that’s cool. Whatever. First order of business, 4Eva N a Day.
The homie Big K.R.I.T. has had us waiting for a while for this project, but it’s finally here. Let’s get right into it, song by song.
1. “8:04 AM” Krit starts the mixtape off by getting his Wale on with a spoken word poem over piano. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, since its an intro.
2. “Wake Up” This beat is wayyyy too dope. I ran this shit back like 4 times before he even started rapping. Once he did start rapping, I started nodding the fuck out of my head. And WOAHHH this hook!!!! Too smooth. Sounds like Devin the Dude meets Bone Thugs. This song is great.
3. “Yesterday” Starts off with “I miss ya like yesterday” which is a cool concept for the track. Another smooth beat. What I’m starting to pick up from how he set up the mixtape is that it starts in the morning, and ends in the night. Anyway, this song is about the death of a loved one. You can hear the emotion in this joint. Raw. I fucks with it.
4. “Boobie Miles” First of all, I love the name of this song without even hearing it. Second, the saxophone in this beat makes me want to pop in a Kenny G album. Crazy sample. Krit is on this joint dropping knowledge. A lot of great wordplay in this track as he compares getting money, grinding, and doing your thang to sports, namely Boobie Miles. If you don’t know who Boobie Miles is, educate yourself. Cool song. Chyeah.
5. “4EvaNaDay (Theme)” This shit bangs! I was waiting for a track like this. I’ve liked the vibe of the first few tracks but I was waiting for something little more upbeat, and here it is. He really starts going in at 1:13.
GHOST NOTE: Big K.R.I.T. is doing his thing so far. I feel like this mixtape is going to be his coming out party (pause) and he’ll really start putting the south back on the map.
6. “Me And My Old School” OH. SHIT. This is that candy-paint-chopped-and-screwed classic southern shit right here. Have mercy. This kind of song is Krit’s strength. Not that the other joints didn’t have a dope feel to them, but this country-style is really his thing. The skit at the end of the song is something you should listen to as well, leads into track 7.
7. “1986” Beats ill, not crazy about the hook though. Actually the longer I listen to this track the more its growing on me. The “ooooWOOhooooooo” in the background is catchy as fuck. Not my favorite track, moving on.
8. “Country Rap Tunes” I love this hook. Every song I hear Krit sing on, he reminds me of a different artist. On this joint he sounds like Outkast, which I heavy fuck with. He’s also spitting some real shit on here about his neighborhood and the country. Krit does a great job with his background engineering. His ad-libs are subtle but soulful.
9. “Sky Club” I’m really feeling this track. Krit has a cool singing voice. This is a smokers joint. Burn one.
10. “Red Eye” This is a deep, love track, but the shit still goes hard. Odds are he’s telling a real story on this track, that’s why I always appreciate songs like this. Also, the beat (just like every other beat on this tape so far) is great.
GHOST NOTE: Thus far, I’m HEAVY fucking with this tape.
11. “Down & Out” This song basically says, “I’m going through some shit right now, but fuck it I’m about to blow these trees”. On this song, he DEFINITELY sounds like Devin The Dude. Great joint. Pun intended. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJJnXUMg4AI
12. “Package Store” I dig this song. Not exactly sure what it’s about other than the “neighborhood package store”, but its dope.
13. “Temptation” This is my least favorite song so far. It’s not a bad song, just doesn’t really fit the feel of the mixtape. He’s talking about trying to “turn this into something” with ‘ole girl, so this is kind of for the ladies I’m guessing. But I don’t know, next song.
14. “Handwriting” Another smooth ass jazz beat with an ill sample. He drops some bars on this. Solid.
15. “Insomnia” I like the title of this song. I’m big on titles. Also, like I said earlier, its following this timeline-of-one-day theme. Right now its late, and Krit can’t sleep. He tells us (well, the girl hes talking to) that she helps him sleep and he’s waiting for her. She apparently comes home, because at 3:06 some girl starts orgasming on the track. It really “tops off” the song.
16. “5:04 AM” Back to the Wale poetry thing, skipped.
GHOST NOTE: I hope he ends this mixtape on a dope note. The last song is so important, to both the listener and the artist. So let’s see what he did on this.
17. “The Alarm” Sure enough, this might be my favorite song on here. This sounds like a Kanye beat, so naturally I’m in love with this shit already. This “Do you believe” sample is epic. The horns, the piano, man its awesome. And K.R.I.T. is spitting some R.E.A.L. shit on this joint. Yeah, the more I’m listening the more I’m falling in love with it. Oh shit he put a choir! Definitely Kanye-ish. Yeah this track has that legendary feel. Great way to end the mixtape. “WAKE UP!”
Final Thoughts: This tape exceeded my expectations. The vibe of this project was chill, but inspirational, with spurts of “DAMN THIS SHIT GOES HARD”. Most of the time, the key is finding the balance of the feel you want to give off, and the feel you think the people are going to want to hear. Which is a lot harder than you’d think. K.R.I.T. did a great job of it on this one.
GHOST GRADE: 89.8% (B+)
